All the splendida subspecies reside in Australia except one which is found in southern New Guinea. Each subspecies shows considerable variation in color dependent on collection location.
trifasciata - Found only in the Northern extremes of Australia. Although there are no subspecies of this fish, its diversity in color forms seems endless. Every stream and river encounted in its range appears to give us a new color form.
