Pseudomugiliidae
Blue-Eyes of Australia & New Guinea

Genus Species  Notes
Kiunga ballochi The original collection was lost during a wild fire in Australia. After many searches in remote New Guinea jungles a new collection was made. Two forms have been found, but are in the hands of only one fish keeper. Hopefully he will soon release specimens to other hobbyists so a repeat of the earlier loss will occur.
Pseudomugil connieaea Named for Doctor Gerald Allen's wife Connie. This New Guinea blue-eye is in the hobby but kept by very few people.
Pseudomugil cyanodosalis Found only in Australia, this species is a marine and estuarine species. It is in the aquarium hobby and well worth the extra effort. No one has yet been able to capture its true beauty in a photograph.
Pseudomugil furcatus This beautifull New Guinea blue-eye never fails to attract the attention of any who are lucky enough to see it. They are avialable in the pet trade, but most of the pet trade stock is severly compromised. Colors have faded and deformities are rampant. There is good quality stock in the hands of serious rainbow keepers.
Pseudomugil gertrudae Found in both Australia and New Guinea. There are many color forms of this species. The predominant differences are spotting and tones of yellow, but body shape also comes into play.
Pseudomugil inconspicuus Found in both Australia and New Guinea. It is a marine and estruarine fish. The name states it all. This is a small cololess fish.
Pseudomugil majusculus Found in New Guinea.
Pseudomugil mellis Found in Australia in soft waters on the east coast. This species has been brought into the hobby on numerous occasions. Unfortunately it is not the easiest fish to keep going and has been lost to the American hobby again and again. It is presently in America and hopefully we will do a little better with it this time.
Pseudomugil novaegineae A rather unremarkable New Guinea species. It is not know to be in the American hobby.
Pseudomugil paludicola Found in southern New Guinea.
Pseudomugil paskai A New Guinea species with an appearence simular to gertrudae. This species is in the hobby. Requires soft and cooler waters to produce offspring of both sexes.
Pseudomugil reticulatus Found on the Vogelkop penisula of Irian Jaya New Guinea
Pseudomugil signifer Eastern coast of Australia. The most varied of all the blue-eye species. There are numerous color forms and body shapes as defined by location. The breeding habits also differ between populations.
Pseudomugil tenellus Found in both Ausrtalia and New Guinea. This is a very attractive blue-eye who's colors are have rarely been caught in photographs. I do not know of one decent published photograph. This fish is well worth the effort to obtain, do not be fooled by the pictures. It is occasional seen in the pet trade.
Scaturiginchthys vermeilipinnis Found only in a few spring fed pools in Queensland Australia. This species has not been able to sustain viable populations in captivity. Each gerneration appears to have less fertility then the one before it until no fertile eggs are obtained. This is a server dissapointment to the rainbowfish hobbyist, because this species is severly endangered in the wild.
