This is the old Savage bridge. Back in the '60's, it was a combination train and car bridge. There was one pair of railroad rails and one lane for cars. To cross the bridge, you had to look to be sure there wern't any trains coming as there wasn't enough room for both train and car at the same time. You also had to be sure there wasn't already a car on the bridge since there was only room for one car at a time. As high as the water had risen in 2001, in 1965 the water was a good 12-15 FEET higher. Up at the top of one of the power poles there used to be a high water mark sign. It has since been stolen. I know for a fact that the water was up that high at that position, because in 1965 I was a volunteer for the railroad (Minneapolis Northfield and Southern) and me and a bunch of other guys were out there sandbagging the tracks, tressles and (a short while later) houses on the Savage side of the river.
