Radio Theater on the Web

The Listeners' Point of View

Radio has wings. It has no stage to keep it within the limits of a proscenium arch, no camera to confine to things that may be seen. The imagination of the listener is our most ardent and helpful collaborator."
-- Jerome Lawrence, from Off Mike, 1944.

"The thing that you were able to achieve in radio was involvement. Participation. Because you didn't have all the pieces to the puzzle. The person coming to the radio set had to bring some of the pieces and fill in. Even if there were forty people working in the studio, they were all concentrating on one ear."
-- Robert E. Lee (Quoted by Leonard Maltin in The Great American Broadcast, P. 27-28)

Contemporary Audio Theater

E-Mail RadioDrama Mailing List.An E-mail list for those interested in modern audio theater. Here's how you can join:
ARTC Alien Voices - http://www.alienvoices.com/ - (CA) - Alien Voices is a company of Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie, both of Star Trek fame. The company is dedicated to bringing out audio versions of classic science fiction stories. They've done a few so far, including Wells' The Time Machine and The Invisible Man, Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, Conan Doyle's The Lost World, and an original Spock Vs. Q. They do have sound files available on the site, in either .wav or .au format.
ARTC Atlanta Radio Theater Company - http://www.artc.org/ - (GA). This tells about the Company, and about tapes they have of their productions. They like Science Fiction, horror, & H.P. Lovecraft, but they've done a wide variety of stuff. They perform every year at DragonCon, science fiction convention in Atlanta, GA. They have won two Mark Time Awards. Their productions are EXCELLENT!
AudioCP AudioCP.com - Your Audiobook Production Information Center - http://www.audiocp.com/. Just what it says, production information on what you need to do to publish a spoken word recording. They tell you what to do, or you can let them do it for you. Very helpful, and a nice looking site, too.
AudioCPAudioDrama.com - http://www.audiodrama.com/dramas.html. Their home page doesn't have links to the pages that actually have drama productions listed, but we found the page and offer it to you here. It seems to be the page of some voiceover actors. Audio dramas from The Creative License, Boston, MA.
Audio Publishers Audio Publishers Association (APA) - http://www.audiopub.org/. Home page of the trade organization that publishes so many of the tapes you listen to, or should be listening to. Books on tape, audio drama, anything in spoken word recording.
Audio Theater Audio Theater - Mind Movies - Radio Drama - http://www.audiotheater.com/. This is a very thorough site dedicated to audio theater of many kinds. Sort of like mine, except that they have lots of lists without much description or review. They do have links and resources that I don't have. Good organization. Includes audio books, audio theater, audio hardware and software makers, even links to Film Sound sites. Look for their page on Who Does Audio Theater?, for a web site list of publishers, producers and distributors.
BBCBBC Radio - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ - (British Broadcasting Corp.). Listings of what's on BBC Radio channels. There is still a lot of drama and comedy there. They just keep cranking them out, year after year. Never give up, and that's great for all of us who like to listen. (Watch out for their on-line magazine "RadioTimes", because it's about BBC TV, not radio at all. Go figure.
Beyond 2000, now 2000-X - http://www.irasov.com/page0002.htm. (CA) - Yuri Rasovsky's recent series of classic science fiction stories, 2000-X. Stories by Heinlein, Jules Verne, Ursula K. Le Guin, Harlan Ellison H. G. Wells, Connie Willis, A.E. Van Vogt, Ray Bradbury, and many more. Performers like Robin Williams, Samantha Eggar, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Foxworth, Arte Johnson, David Warner, Nancy Cartwright, Phil Proctor and Melinda Peterson, and more. Also available on-line through Audible.com. It was originally titled Beyond 2000 (hence it's position in this list), but the threat of petty litigation caused him to change the name of the series.
I'm airing them on KFAI in Minneapolis in August, and the first Saturday of the month after that. See current schedule. Airing Summer 2000 on NPR Playhouse.
Blue Ridge Radio Players - http://www.wncguide.com/nat/history.htm. A Division of the National Audio Theater. Makers and distributors of audio theater, especially for the blind and people with disabilities. An impressive list of productions available. Distributed mostly to disabilities organizations and libraries across the country. Includes a page to make a donation to their work, and guidelines for submitting scripts.
CART California Artists Radio Theater - http://members.aol.com/radiolog/cart.html. The produce regularly, doing adaptations of classic literature and original dramas. They have a very distinguished list of Hollywood actors in their casts. A lot of their material appears on NPR Playhouse. Included in their site is a schedule of when their programs appear on KPFK in Los Angeles, if that is of use to you.
CBC CBC Radio Drama - http://radioworks.cbc.ca/radio/programs/drama/drama.html - (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) Canadian broadcasting has a longer history of radio drama than the American media does.
CBS CBS Radio Mystery Theater - http://www.wrvo.com/listen.html. - Himan Brown's old CBS Radio Mystery Theater programs can be heard live on the Web on Friday nights starting between 9-9:15pm EST on WRVO http://www.wrvo.com/listen.html. It's a popular and well-produced series from the 70s, harking back to the Old Time Radio drama style. Fan sites include http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Byte/7548/index2.html.
Cephalopod Cephalopod Productions - http://www.cephalopod.com/. Producers of "The Apotheosis Saga", winner of a Silver 1997 Mark Time Award for best original production. A really excellent audio show and story, in 8 (of 10) episodes. All done on Macintosh computers, no less. And a nicer couple of guys you'll not meet.
Colonial Radio Theater Colonial Radio Theatre - http://www.colonialradio.com/. (Boston, MA) - The Colonial Radio Theatre On The Air produces American history based audio theater. They research the history and try to stay accurate to events. Acting on the productions is uneven, but the stories are engaging, and boy are they good at battle scenes! Their web site includes sample sound files from some programs, and you can order them directly or from some other catalogs, including LodesTone.
Comedy-O-Rama - http://www.comedyorama.com/radio/radio.htm. by Joe Bevilacqua. RealAudio files of comedy, especially Old Time Radio shows, and a number of original productions of his own. Try out The Listening Room, to hear the latest productions. I'll have his series "The MisAdventures of Sherlock Holmes" on Sound Affects (KFAI-FM, Mpls, MN) starting in September.
The Cosmic Forces - http://www.the-cosmic-forces.net/. The Soul Patrol are not angels, but they are sent with a mission from a higher source to bring ironic retribution to people who do evil. At least that's the impression I get from these stories. Short episodes of about 15 minutes each, to listen to in RealAudio format. Episode 6 will be released in October 2000. Production values are excellent, acting is very good. I haven't heard them all, but I am intrigued by the latest episode posted on the front of the web site. The Site is simple and easy to negotiate.
Radio Works Cyberplex Theater - http://tribeca.ios.com/~cyberplx. Real Audio broadcasts from, among others, The Radio Works, via SueMedia (NY). Hasn't been updated since 1997.
Delos Delos Radio International - http://www.fantascienza.com/delosradio/ - (Italy.) A virtual radio station - Cyberspazio! - broadcasting science fiction radio shows via Real Audio, entirely in Italian. Live IN the Future! Very cool background image.
Radio Theater Bristol Don't Touch That Dial! - http://www.naws.com/radio/ - (Bristol, VA) - At Radio Theater Bristol, in Virginia, they are doing original radio theater, including mysteries, children's stories, and comedy. Tapes available. Check their Web site for broadcast schedule on WETS-FM, and further information.
Dr. Science Ask Dr. Science - http://www.ducksbreath.com/. - Go ahead. Ask Dr. Science. He knows more than you do. Want to submit a question to Dr. Science? This page tells you how. It also contains who and why, sound files and more. (And Dan Coffey is an actor who works a lot in radio theater, so we include his page in this listing.)
Fireside Theater - http://www.thefiresidetheater.com/center/index.html. - Fireside Audio Productions. They say it's in the tradition of Old Time Radio drama and it requires a G2 RealAudio player. But I couldn't get to any page that actually did anything. No links except to download a RealAudio player. Nothing to play. Hope they fix that.
Firesign Firesign Theatre - http://www.firesigntheatre.com/. The official home page for the 4 or 5 Crazy Guys. Lots of crazy stuff, including new writings by Firesign members, and sounds from and info about their latest album, Boom Dot Bust, including some cool animations. There are links to a number of other web sites that have Firesign information.
I have my own page with further reference links on it. Firesign Theatre Page <http://www.mtn.org/~jstearns/Firesign.html>. Check it out for recent info and how to reach the Firesign Theatre FAQ pages.
The Funnt File - Tharsis Productions - http://members.aol.com/tharsispro/series1.html. - A silly science fiction audio series. The site has info on the series and its producers, audio clips and MP3 files, and looks pretty good, too. I've aired the series on Sound Affects in the past, and will probably do it again.
Generations Radio Generations Radio Theater - http://www.radiotales.com/ (New address) - Generations Radio Theater has produced a series of dramatic readings of classic American literature marked by a top-to-bottom musical score fully integrated into the text. The site offers a listing of past programs, information about the series, and a number of MP3 sound samples from the programs broadcast via NPR Playhouse.
GiveMeTalk.com - http://www.givemetalk.com/. I hesitate to include this, but it does have some audio theater buried in it. It's a site for Do It Yourself Talk Radio on-line. Lots and lots of ordinary people doing what is likely very dull on-line talk shows. But it you look around, you can find some theater and comedy. I heard about it from someone doing a show called Percy's Crypt, supposed to be horror related. However, Percy has left the building. Give GiveMeTalk.com a try.
Sexton's Tales Great Northern Radio Theatre - http://www.mtn.org/~jstearns/gnrt.html - (Minneapolis/St. Paul). Some of my own productions available on tape or CD, including performances for SHOCKWAVE comic science fiction radio, and a few half-hour studio productions - including Permafrost, MN (1998), Tumbleweed Roundup (1995) and Solid State University (1993), and Star of Vengeance (serial), among others.
Growler Radio - http://www.growler.com/. Sophisticated storytelling for children. Their website shows them to have an extensive catalog of tapes and CDs aimed at children. "We use a huge palette of effects, sound design, music, kids, unusual voices, and audio environments all focused to maximize the storytelling power of sound.  And since listening in on the action is more interesting than listening to a storyteller, we NEVER use a narrator.  Growler stories are known for sophisticated audio production, richness of story content, and hefty doses of non-traditional thinking.  28 incredible audiocassettes/CDs and more coming..."
Sexton's Tales Highgate Cemetery - The Sexton's Tales - http://www.tales.ndirect.co.uk/ - (BBC). Emlyn Harris's radio tales of some of the extraordinary people buried in Highgate Cemetery (THE place to be intered in London.) Not available in the U.S. yet. Now expanded to cover other of Mr. Harris's projects. Award winning British web page, too!
Sexton's TalesHigh Window Radio Classics Theatre - (Poughkeepsie, NY) - http://www.networkzero.com/. Adaptations of literary classics by Melville, Dickens and Mark Twain, plus their own original series, The Specter. Broadcast on WHVW, 950 AM in the Hudson River Valley in New York. Scripts also available for production or for reading on the web site. I had trouble trying to listen to their on-line examples.
Comedy Hub City Spoke Repair - http://www.exit109.com/~hubcity/hcsr/. (Jackson, NJ.) Sketch comedy from New Jersey, of all places. 42 episodes in 9 years. Don't appear to be producing now. Get through a few intro pages to get to the sound samples page. It's worth it. Thanks to Sean Carolan for the page and the group.
Traditional Radio Drama Imagination Theater - http://www.transmediasf.com/imag.html. Although I wouldn't agree, necessarily, with their claim that they do "the best radio drama in 50 years", they are producing a full hour each week in front of a live audience. And it's pretty good stuff, too. It airs on WCCO-AM radio in Minneapolis, Saturday nights at 11:00 PM and another hour at Midnight. Reminiscent of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater of a few years ago.
Sound Affects The Independent Eye - http://www.independenteye.org/ (CA). "The Independent Eye is a progressive theatre ensemble, now in its 26th season, devoted to creating new plays and new visions of classics. Based in northern California, our work reaches a national audience through touring, public radio, and publication." Their listings for public radio programs look pretty good, though I haven't heard it myself.
Independent Radio Drama Productions Independent Radio Drama Productions - http://www.irdp.co.uk/ - (UK). One of the biggest and most certainly the best radio drama production companies in the United Kingdom. I've heard a number of their pieces on National Public Radio here. The Web Site has information about their broadcast schedules, tapes available from them, and some excellent tips on writing radio drama. Recently Tim Crook has published here a chapter from his forthcoming book about "International Radio Drama." Excellent reading. I've never met them, but I like them already.
LATW L.A. TheatreWorks - http://www.kcrw.org/latw/latw.html (Los Angeles. CA). Producing classic and contemporary radio theater, with some of the best known actors in Hollywood. Truly excellent work, performed live, though you would never know from listening to it. They have a catalog of tapes available through their website, too. Some VERY good work here. Producing Director, Susan Loewenberg.
Last Summer Productions - http://www.lastsummer.com/ - They have a few productions available, mostly of the mystic horror sort of story. The Will of Osiris is a modern day horror tale with Egyptian overtones. They are hyping a new release of a 1995 high fantasy production called Ebon Storms, based on a roll playing game. Episodes are available for listening on their web site.
Sound Affects Little Evil Things - http://www.littleevilthings.com/ . Short horror stories performed by one voice, to sound effects and music. They come well reviewed, though their short on-line examples don't really give you enough of an idea of how good they are over a complete story. Four volumes available on CD or cassette.
LodesTone LodesTone Catalog - http://www.lodestone-media.com/ - (Bloomington, IN). This is a GREAT catalog of audio theater, videos, Firesign Theatre, Norman Corwin, and much more! Has some audio sites that even I don't list! See their Audio Theatre Pages at http://www.lodestone-media.com/lode/catalog/linkpage.html.
LATW M and J Audio Theatre - http://www.glade.net/~audiotheatre/index.html. "Chet Chetter's Tales From the Morgue" comes from these guys. A quite silly series of macabre science fiction and horror tales, in half-hour episodes. They have been run on NPR Playhouse in the past. Certainly imaginative stuff, that doesn't take it seriously - my kind of material. I've only heard a couple of these, but they are pretty good. You can purchase tapes from their web site.
KFAI Mark Trail Radio Theatre - http://www.kfai.org/programs/mtrt.htm (Minneapolis, MN). Babs takes the previous week's Mark Trail newspaper comic strip, rewrites it into a hilarious take-off on the story, and puts it all together into one of the funniest and hippest radio comic strips anywhere. Just read the story synopses on the Web Site for a hint of how good this is. Won a Silver Reel Award from the NFCB for best radio drama. Great stuff!
Airs on KFAI in Minneapolis each Friday night at 11:00 PM, and the next Monday morning at 6:45 AM. Also available in Real Audio from the Web site. Check it out!
MaxMedia MaxMedia... by Jeff Green - http://www.achilles.net/~jgreen/ - (Ottawa, Ontario.)This guy is really good! The shows are intricate, fun to listen to, and very well produced. A nice-looking page with sound file examples of his works in audio, video and multi-media. Now includes chapters of the Spaxter novel in progress. (The Spaxter radio plays are really great, so I expect the novel will be, too.) Jeff's terrific tapes are available through the LodesTone catalog.
MRTW Mind's Ear Audio Productions - http://www.minds-ear.org/ - (Bloomington, IN) A fairly new production company. Latest production is French Quarter, a 13-part series about modern day New Orleans. Just won a Golden Headset Award from Audio World. (See their web site or the Radio Theater News page.)
NORT New Orleans Radio Theater - http://gnofn.org/nort/ - (New Orleans, LA) - They produce recreations of Old Time Radio scripts. Their first page takes a long time to load, with pictures of the principle people and a big microphone. There is a list of productions they've done, but still little actual content on the pages.
Pictures In My Head Radio Theater - http://www.fix.net/~geister/radio.html. (CA). "THE PICTURES IN MY HEAD RADIO THEATER is a cerebral stew of drama, story-telling, music theater and operatic singing, sprinkled with ample sound effects and music. Author/performer Garry Eister, is joined by guest artists..." Titles and script excerpts on the site seem to have a decidedly spiritual/religious tone to them.
Plays on Tape Plays on Tape and CD - http://www.playsontape.com/ (Bend, OR). An Audio Publishing concern that means what it says - they publish "plays" on tape. Best thing is they are accepting submissions of long one act or full length plays, and mention that not all plays translate well to the audio medium.
PlayRight PlayRight Productions, UK- http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/glynz/ (Leeds, UK). A theater organization that is now expanding into Radio in Yorkshire. They do have guidelines for writers available. Their web site is all text and very simple and spare.
Portland Radio Theater - http://usmcug.usm.maine.edu/~prt-wmpg/ (Portland, ME). A nice site connected with WMPG public radio in Portland. They have audio clips, whole scripts, pictures of the cast and crew, and more.
Portland Radio Theater Radio College - Radio Theater - http://www.westernpublicradio.org/rc/theater.html. (San Francisco, CA). Western Public Radio is known for their excellent radio training courses. Here they are compiling articles about the production of audio theater by some of the best in the country. A very good resource for writing, producing, directing and listening.
Radio Free Cow Town - http://www.radiofreecowtown.org/ (Kansas City, MO). A rousing radio series full of Kansas City history, music, cow puns and colorful characters. Episodes available in RealAudio on the web site.
RRCA Radio Repertory Company of America - http://www.rrca.com/ - (NJ). Producers of the detective stories of "Garson Krebs". Good homage to the hard-boiled dicks, played straight to great comic effect. Aired on NPR Playhouse. There are ten episodes so far. "The Brooke Sisters" series is now available, too. Two wonderfully eccentric ex-criminals who now help solve murders. Sci-Fi series with Marina Sirtis of ST:TNG titled "Flight of the Bumble Bee" is available. New series released last year is "Lives of the Cat", with Claudia Christian, of Babylon 5. It's quite good fun.
Swedish Radioteatern - http://www.yle.fi/radioteatern/english/index.htm - (Swedish Radio Theater in Finland)This is the English Language page, though they have Finnish and Swedish versions, too. I just like the concept of this: as though we were doing radio especially for French-Canadians.
The Radio Works - http:/www.suemedia.com/. (New York City) The Radio Works is a showcase of modern radio theater eminating from Hempstead, NY, on Long Island. They distribute examples of the works of contemporary producers from all over the country to stations in 32 states and Australia. They have been around for 10 years, and definitely cover the wide diversity of program that is available out there. We air some of them on Sound Affects.
Searcher & Stallion Searcher and Stallion - http://www.searcherandstallion.com/ - (Salt Lake City, Utah). Started out as a "narrative drama" with music and sound effects, but they have moved into full cast productions now. . Very well written, good music and effects. It kept my interest throughout the episode I heard. I liked the characters and the little science fictional touches - like the space suit.
Seeing Ear Seeing Ear Theatre - http://www.scifi.com/pulp/set/. Part of the Dominion, a product of The Sci-Fi Channel. A virtual radio station for a high tech age. They have RealAudio feeds of classic OTR science fiction, and original works, too. Some very imaginative stuff. Give a listen. Maintained by Brian Smith, who also is producer and writer for some new original works being aired here and such places as NPR Playhouse. Downloads of new material available at Audible.com. Better catch it now, as the channel was recently sold, and the people at Seeing Ear have been let go. I wouldn't count on there being much more from them in the real future.
Shoestring Shoestring Radio Theater - http://www.shoestring.org/ - (and Movie Magazine). (San Francisco, CA.)They have an impressive record, having been at it for a long time. They have corporate sponsors so they can distribute a show every week via the Public Radio Satellite. Pretty good scripts, good production. Acting has been their weakest point, I think.
60 Second 60 Second Theater - http://www.letusout.com - (Denver). "World's Quickest Theater." Or so they say. Producers of little minute radio plays. Some available as sound files on their Web page. Cool.
Sound Affects Sound Affects: A Radio Playground - http://www.mtn.org/~jstearns/SFX.html (Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN). I host this weekly program on KFAI-FM. A half-hour, Saturdays at 3:00 PM. 90.3 or 106.7 FM. Also available on-line at www.kfai.org. Current Schedule. Radio drama, comedy, and the unexpected juxtaposition of audio works.
SoundMind theater Soundmind Theater - http://www.soundmindtheater.com/. These guys are certainly covering the gamut of stories, with "Curse of Dracula", "Captain Kruton, Space Marshall of the Universe" and the new Civil War production, "Antietam: The Lost Command." Clearly they aren't tied down to any particular style. Their personnel credits are impressive, too.
SoundStories: SoundStories : - http://www.mtn.org/~jstearns/ss/ss.html. (Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN) From the people who brought you the Twin Cities Radio Theatre Workshop, a new radio theater group producing original and classic radio drama. Tapes available. Recent productions include horror tale "Blood Night" by Lon Ryden, and Mark Time Award winner "407 Arachne" by Brian d'Eon.
Stuffed Moose Stuffed Moose Productions - http://www.deepcove.com/stuffedmoose/. A Canadian group that has done some nice work in the field of light ghost stories. Two tapes of "Spirited Yarns" are available with stories from Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Can be ordered through The LodesTone Catalog.
Imagination Theatre of the Imagination - http://pages.prodigy.com/nostalgic/Joe Audolina has a LOT of audio tapes to trade. He's got tapes from NPR, the BBC and CBC, and other places, and seems to be willing to trade copies for other things he doesn't have.
Tony Kahn Tony Kahn Productions - http://www.crocker.com/~blklist/Blacklisted is the story of screenwriter Gordon Kahn and the effect that being blacklisted back in the 50s had on his life and family. Produced by his son, I take it. The cast list is impressive for this production.
WCRS Radio Stage - http://members.xoom.com/radiodave1/. An on-line, on-demand audio theater resource. Half a dozen short audio plays you can listen to on-line whenever you feel like it. Their latest seems to be "The Sherlock Holmes Assignment." A new play coming "next month". You can also hear some productions of site host David Binkley's scripts done by The Shoestring Radio Theater in San Francisco.
White Noise White Noise Radio Theatre - http://hmilton.home.texas.net/features/noise/index.htmlAt the bottom of this web page is a disclaimer stating that this page is best viewed on a screen with larger dimensions and resolution. Those of us with smaller screens can expect to scroll back and forth across the page to see all of it. The descriptive writing on these pages is befitting of the name "White Noise": obscure and difficult to follow. Even the "About" and "Episodes" pages did not give me any indication of what these programs might be about. I'll really have to hear some of the programs to know anything. The lack of useful description does not entice me to want to listen. MAY be a good audio program; NOT a helpful web site, in my opinion.
Yuri Yuri Rasovsky - Audio Dramatist - http://www.irasov.com/. The irrascible Yuri has done some remarkable work over many years. Recently released some good science fiction for public radio in the 2000-X Series. He's also done some really good "highbrow" work, like his 5-part series on Ben Franklin in London, Craven Street. .
The site includes some of Yuri's articles about radio theater, and his own lexicon of audio theater terms, which is very complete. He's working on a book about audio theater production.
ZBS ZBS Foundation - http://www.zbs.org/ - (New York State). Makers of "RUBY, The Galactic Gumshoe," various adventures of Jack Flanders, and lots more. Really, really good! Well written, great production, and don't take themselves seriously. Fun to listen to. (See more details in my Science Fiction on Radio page at http://www.mtn.org/~jstearns/SFradio.html.)

RUBY 5 is now out, AND the conclusion of a new Jack Flanders adventure, Midnight at the Casa Luna. He's also released The Best of Saratoga Springs, two CDs of episodes from the lengthy episode series, and some material from the RUBY archives on CD. Some ZBS mysteries came out in 1999, Recipe For Murder, in collaboration with the CBC, with food themes, and Fat Cats, a mystery set on an Island in the Hudson River. A sequel to the first Jack Flanders work, titled Return to Inverness, is available now. Always something new going on in upstate New York.

Ziplow Ziplow Productions - Recently went out of business. Steve Ziplow adapted and produced with players from the Hilton Head Repertory Company. Several of John DeChancie's novels, versions of "Dracula" and "War of the Worlds," and a couple of original science fiction short story anthologies. A 1998 original production called Rocket Men (by Daniel Cline), about the REAL first expedition to the moon, won a Silver Mark Time Award for Best Science Fiction Audio in 1999, and a new Sci-Fi Shorts II was nominated for a Golden Headset Award from Audioworld.
ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha - The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Appreciation Web Site - http://www.zz9.org/. (England). A homey little web site for proper appreciators of the Hitchhiker's Guide Radio Show, aired first on the BBC in 1978, and a world-weird phenomonon since then in books, Television, audio books, and someday to be a movie. (Douglas Adams is happy if they never make the movie, because every couple of years he gets to sell the movie rights again. And his favorite version of the whole thing is the radio production, anyway.)

Old Time Radio

"The radio play, a new form of dramatic interest, is increasing rapidly in popularity. Go to a movie and then come home and listen to a Radario and you will have received two exactly opposite theatrical effects. Perhaps, in the near future, you may have both movie and Radio broadcast to you.
"Of course, scenes and acts from current plays are often broadcast, but many eastern stations now have their own theatrical groups and give plays especially adapted for Radio use. Pretend you are blind and listen to these plays. The better your imagination, the better the play." -- Radio Digest, Oct. 27, 1923

Old Time Radio (OTR) WWW Page - http://www.old-time.com/toc.html. Maintained by Lou Genco, of Airwaves and rec.radio.broadcasting. Includes lists of OTR Clubs and Libraries, history and articles on OTR, and lots of related links. Very comprehensive.
Radio Days - Jim Widner's OTR Page - http://www.otr.com/. Program Logs, sound files, and lots of Old Time Radio drama resources. Also, Jim wrote a book, with Meade Frierson, titled SF on Radio: A Revised Look at 1950-1975. Good introduction to the subject, or good info for the afficianado.
The Vintage Radio Place - http://www.otrsite.com/. A site created by the gentleman who started SPERDVAC, a club for Old Time Radio enthusiasts and collectors. Lots of good information, links, and a great attitude. He truly loves the stuff.
U Memphis Radio Program Archive - http://www.people.memphis.edu/~mbensman/. Maintained by Professor Marvin R. Bensman, J.D., Ph.D. BIG graphics on first page, that takes a long time to load.
Yesterday USA - http://www.yesterdayusa.com/. An on-line "SuperStation" broadcasting OTR programs 24 hours a day. Lots of articles about the behind the scenes of OTR, like the history of the NBC Chimes. Neato!
Radio Bristol - http://www.preferred.com/rtb/ - (Maryland). Recreators of Old Time Radio programs from the Broadcast Pioneers Library at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.
