We stayed two nights in Bergen, another city
you don't want to drive in. Almost everything you want to see is
within walking distance anyway. It is a wet city with rain more
than half the days in a year. We had a good mixture of rain, wind
and mostly sun.
It
was Music Festival time in Bergen. Something different each day
and varied entertainment around the city during the day on
weekends. The Saturday we were there there was a "Club"
day where many area clubs were competing as drum corps (only drums)
marching units. The units started about a block from our hotel and
marched all around the city for 3-4 hours. At
the end of the day the winning unit was announced in the plaza just up
the street in the picture at the right. Got pretty loud at times! |

At
the left is a view down one of the "alleys" that used to be
the old warehouse district. As you can see everything is very
close together... Not good for fires. Bergen has burned
several times and they are very cautious about fire.
The Funicular, a cable driven trolley that starts within the mountain
near the wharf, goes to a lookout near the top of
the mountain. The red trolley can be seen at the the top of the
picture of the Bryggen below 1/3 of the way in from the right
edge. As can be seen in the picture above this is a very steep
ride. The view of Bergen from the top is great. (see second
large picture below). |
